I could have been there and said the same thing. Not in a perfect english but …:)
The cases you are presenting are real and hard evidence that there is a misunderstanding of social media in the business world at large.
The super troopers and champions like jetblue, Starbucks, instead of inspiring others, they seems to be shying them away because it takes courage to be out there and to letgo of control.
I suspect the “I am not getting the social media stuff” is caused by not wanting to justify paying someone to help you build a facebook page – that is where they do not get it!!!

The root of the issue is that most companies want to apply an old model to a new cultural/social/business shift

Keith : sometimes, Genius is just seeing what very very few others see, even if it something simple and obvious :) ….
