10 Social Media Power Users Share One Line of Wisdom

book.jpgCan you distill your social media and digital best practices down to one simple phrase? Do you have a one liner that that distills the essence of social networking and the new media space? I asked this very question to a diverse group of social media power users including myself and here were the answers:

Social media exemplifies the adage “garbage in, garbage out;” make sure your contribution isn’t garbage
-Eric Berto

You need to be present, engaged and helpful long before you ask for anything. You give to get. To me, that’s the essence of biz dev in a 2.0 world.
-Amber Naslund

Be a champion for your industry/cause/interest, not just yourself.
Be creative in how you communicate with and engage your audience.
-Mark Blevis

To say you are in business to make money is a given. You don’t need that to be your opening line. You wouldn’t let a stranger tend to your child. Let people get to know you, business and friendships will follow if you have patience.
-Kneale Mann

Make altruism work for you
-John Meadows

If you choose the right customers, there is a much better chance that the customer is always right.
-John T Unger

We naturally want to do business with friends whom we can trust and these tools allow us to
forge and nurture those relationships.
-Justin Levy

Social media is the name of the bucket that contains all the tools that enable online collaboration and conversations.
-Shannon Boudjema

There is no difference between the online and offline world— the Golden Rule still applies.
If there is no value exchange, there is no value.
-Durjoy “Ace” Bhattacharjya

Never approach a network or individual in a network with a greedy one sided agenda
-Keith Burtis

This is a very, very diverse list of people with a wide spectrum of business knowledge and experiences. However, the one major theme that I see running through all of these is that value must be given for value to be received. It almost seems 3rd grade business 101 but it s amazing how many people forget this. People sign up to twitter just to shout through their megaphones, businesses start blogging just to extoll their own virtues. However, the truly successful in business and in life in my opinion are the givers. I know for myself that the majority of pleasure in my life is that of giving back. Try spending five minutes a day thinking about what you are grateful for and then turn around and give back to someone you don’t even know. Let me know how you feel.
