My Ultimate Home

Thematic Change of Pace?

I’m not really sure how this post fits into my blog theme of social media, creativity and community but I’m writing it because it seems like fun! Heck, I’d be really interested in hearing what you all have to say about what your ultimate home is! To be completely honest this post was inspired by a tweet that I read by Linda Sherman on twitter.

The Ulimate Home

The Ultimate home for me has to meet some specific needs:
1. The home has to be practical and fitting for the evolving needs of a growing family
2. The house should be fairly self sustaining in terms of energy and carbon footprint
3. the House should be pleasing to the eye and comfortable. I don’t like sharp corners and cold crisp lines.
4. The house must be pet friendly.
5. The House must meet the needs of myself and my future wife (Michelle) without major compromise.
6. The house must have land and a heated barn for me to create my woodturned art.
7. A pond would be nice :) (Bonus***)

Is this too much to ask?

I grew up in a modest house. Not huge but by no means small or lacking in space. We had an ample back yard and a forested area where my brother, sister and friends spent the majority of our time playing and building tree forts. However, times change and people evolve. I would like a house with many of the same characteristics, but with a few perks for my family while being environmentally friendly. I believe in writing things like this down because it brings out your imagination for possibility. I will have this home some day!

I’ve always liked a sort of arched entrance or a gated front walk with a beautiful garden area and grass for the kids to play. (Photos all Creative Commons and not exactly what I would like but good inspiration)

I would love, love, love to have a Windmill on my ample land. The windmill will help provide clean power for the home as well as recharge the electric vehicle.

A home with a comfortable feel and nice view. I believe in the energy of spaces and the ability to harness ones creative force through the outside world.

Like I said. Must be pet friendly :)

I can seriously picture myself heading out to this beautiful old barn on a nice summer morning for a bout of woodturning before the kids and family awaken. Afterwards, heading back in to make them their favorite breakfast of bacon and corn muffin pancakes.

Interesting Exercise

Of course the house must have a great kitchen for family get-togethers and an office that is FULLY wired with the fastest of internet, but the main thing this house needs is LOVE. This was a really fun and interesting exercise. As I go back and look at the photos I see a picture forming in my head. Intentions and goals that I know I can meet! How much fun!

So honestly, I am not going to make this one of those tagged blog memes, but I hope if your reading this you feel compelled and inspired to create your own Ultimate home post. Please, if you do let me know, ping me, link back or just send me an email. I would love to see what your ultimate home looks like!

I can definitely relate to your list. I’ve always wanted to build a green, energy-independent (solar, geothermal, wind, etc) & efficient home. I would add only two things to your list: 1) I’d like enough acreage to raise a few horses, and 2) that it be completely paid for! :)

Dennis, great points..and I am 100% with you on those thoughts!

great post. modest and ‘right for you’ is the way to much more than super-sized and impersonal. with all of the real estate messes around the country, now is the perfect time for us to re-think what we thought we wanted and refactor our new realities into our dream homes.

Keith, I found you and your blog thanks to Mark Harai, who I guess must be a mutual acquaintance of ours. You can blame him or thank him for the introduction, whichever the case may be. :)

I live on an 80-acre farm in eastern Nebraska. We updated the 100+ year-old farm house and have several outbuildings. We also have a pond, nothing like the picture above — more of an artesian spring that runs into a dam my husband put in a few years ago. Rustic, but natural-looking. We raise turkeys, chickens, guineas and ducks. Corn and soybeans.

I guess you could say I live in my dream home and I realize how fortunate I am.

I trust you will get there someday as well. All you have to do — is do it.

I’m very glad I stopped by. You have a very nice blog.

Thank you guys for the great comments. I really appreciate them.

Hey Keith, I think that such an exercise is a lovely idea. I’ve often sketched out what I’d like in a home and made lists of wants (versus needs), but thus far I have not used real photographs of places that inspire me and put them together to see how the vision further evolves. I connected especially with the image of the pond and the desire to have a beautiful view. I believe our working and living environments have a lot of power to give us energy, if they are designed in a way that is conducive to our personalities. Here’s to your ultimate home!

I am so pleased to have provided the spark for this great post.

The warmth and love you are aiming for comes through very nicely.

Getting off the grid with alternate energy is a very smart goal. For the purposes you describe, you should probably find a windmill with an 8 foot diameter blade swing adequate. It won’t need to be as large nor expensive as the one you picture here. (I realize the challenge you faced in finding a “home” windmill photo).
