Twitter Phishing– Public Service Announcement

Twitter phishing scam

I am not pretending to be an authority on the subject of this scam, but I will tell you what I do know.

Many people on Twitter have been compromised. Someone is sending out tweets that look like this:

TWITTER USER MAME: Hey Look at this Funny Blog —-LINK——–

What is happening is, the link will take you to a fake twitter login page. People are entering their name and password thinking that twitter crashed again and the perps are collecting your name and password. What I believe is happening is that someone wrote a script to access the twitter Open API and the bot is making calls to the API and sending automatic Direct Messages to everyone of your friends. This Direct message contains the link to the fake twitter page, people are entering their name and password and it’s all a viscous cycle.

I have changed my twitter password even though I was not compromised. However an hour ago I received two DM’s that were both the phishing scam. That is the work of a bot. I am writing this blog post as a simple public service to stay the heck away from these DM’s.

If you receive one of these DM’s please notify the owner of that account. These are not fake accounts! They are real accounts that people trust. Tell the owner to notify twitter and to change their Password immediately.

Here is the twitter search of people talking about the scam.

Thanks for the heads up. I had heard a little tweeting about this, but wasn’t really sure what was happening. It’s good to be aware. Those tricky little devils. Why do people get such a kick out of making life miserable for the rest of us?
